Camaro Z28
A VERY
simple page.
Welcome to my Camaro Z28 pages. Things will be added quite often, well, often as I do something to the car, hopefully all of that will be good, but im sure there will be some things that won't go right. Anywho, before I start... no, I am starting now.
July 14th 2005
Holy crap, has it been a while! Fixed the Z, just took a gamble and replaced the opti (actually came across a good ebay deal), turned out to be right. Totally disassembled the old opti, perfectly clean and AOK looking on the inside, go figure. So the misfire is gone, bout freakin time. Also, pulled the headers off and tried to redo gaskets, even filed the headers flat, and cleaned the cylinder heads, and got a new set of copper gaskets, still leak. Fucking hooker shorties have been nothing but a PITA. While those were out, I did spark plugs, and installed some new o2 sensors, the old ones were working, but i know they had atleast 50k on em. Also, got a flexible Lokar stainless dipstick, checking oil now isn't like taking a kick in the balls anymore. My power steering pump still leaks worse than Joan Rivers at a funeral, but I'll get to it. Gotta love havin the Camaro as a spare car, brake torques and burnouts have increased by at least 500%! More info later, check the primary project out.

Well, I think I have nailed down the problem with the Delteq, after lots of scope work, testing, and finding nothing, I pulled the plug wires off one last time to check the hardware of the Coils... well la de freakin da! Didn't even need a scope for this, just one look at the coil tower showed something was amiss (no pun intended... wait yes there was). The coil tower was burned very badly. Checked the coil for resistance, off the scale, even moreso when hot. Checked the wires and plugs and they checked out fine. So I sent for some new coils from Delteq, installed those babies, and then my passenger side radiator tank split. Actually, I think it had been split for some time by the trails of old dried coolant, but it just got to the point where it was shooting across the garage. Well, crap. I ordered an end tank from gm for $25. Evidently this is somewhat common problem amoungst the LT1 folks. Anway, after about an hours work with some simple tools I had the end tank installed, much cheaper than buying a whole new rad. But now that we've had about 10" of snow and more is on the way, I won't be able to drive the car and find out if anything still works... doh! Also, the very serious thought of turning the 94 Camaro into a semi-stock road car is... very serious?! After I figure out some stuff in life that will allow me to continue with this thought, the autox will begin. Until next time.

Well, some bad news on the Camaro. The Delteq has turned out to be a problem, I have a SERIOUS miss at 3700 RPMs and its always there, always severe, and always at the same spot. Now this isn't your common misfire, where the engine pops and studders at a certain RPM or certain load. This misfire happens right at 3700, and it only lasts for a split second. But during that split second the car just falls flat on its face, HARD. I've been communicating with the people at Delteq who have been great, and much help, they are helping as much as they can. Now, that takes us to another step of ... not so good things that happened.
While trying to test a new piece of equipment that was sent to me by Delteq I had a problem arise. It goes somewhat like this. I had installed the new piece of electronics, and was out taking the car for a test drive to validate whether the problem had been fixed or not. I was driving through town making my way to a nearby road where I could open the car up a bit and see if it would misfire. Well, after about 20-30 mins of driving I finally got some room to beat on the Z a bit. So, I did so. Ramped right through first gear with no problems, and slammed into 2nd, then right as I was shifting into 3rd, the hood flew open and smashed against the car. DAMN... the safety latch didn't catch or anything, it had stuck in the open position allowing the hood to open on its own once I got up to speed. Suprisingly, the Camaro is easy to drive with the hood open ;) however, the hood was nicely messed up, and the windshield now has some extra cracks in it! WOO! All in all though it's not that bad. I already have purchased a replacement hood from another Camaro, its black, and its quite clean and only cost me a grand total of $75 bucks. Its already on the car and fits nicely. Still need to pick up a set of hood hinges and hood shocks, since the last set of each were destroyed with the hood. But on the good side this gives me an excuse to get some new paint on the car! AND! the windshield was already cracked nicely so I don't feel bad about that being smashed a tad more either. Heh, what a time, what a time. Anyway, stay tuned, more due in a while hopefully.

April 26th
Well, my optispark took a dump, and I replaced it with a distributorless system from www.delteq.com. Sooooo much better. Also, while washing my car ... my windshield decided to crack like no other, so that will have to be replaced soon. Other than that, nothin super new, gonna try and get to the track again and make another pass and see if i can improve on my runs. Picture of the Delteq here.
April 13th
Well, it has been quite some time since I've last updated this page, been busy with the 85 Camaro, school, and of course work. However!!! I did FINALLY take the Z28 to the track to get some 1/4 Mile times in. On cold street tires I ran a best of 13.617 @ 105.5mph (not bad for a car with 130k on the clock). Obviously if traction was not an issue low 13's could be acheived. However spinning through first and into second doesn't help. Also, tried a set of copper header gaskets to no avail, the D-Port gaskets dont work with headers! (would be nice that summit had told me that instead of that the gaskets would fit!?) So I stuck a set of felpros on, blew out maybe after 5 minutes, go figure. Other than that, nothing new other than the usual me being hit again along the entire passenger side of the car... nothing severe but enough to cause 1300.00 in work. Not going to fix it for some time, rather spend the funds on the project. Speaking of project, take a look at the 85 page, few things have been updated, check back now and then too for new updates etc.

Shifter is doing great... the pinion gear shaft in the differential... not so good, needs to be replaced. Also was recently having a misfire under load at moderate to low RPMs. Found out one plug wire and broken and another was arcing like mad. Replaced all the STOCKER wires with MSD SuperConductor 8.5mm Wires. Perfect... running on 8 as opposed to 6 cylinders makes a difference! Also, fixed the infamous intake manifold leak and cleaned the manifold and injectors up. Only things left to fix other than the pinion gear shaft are the drive pinion seal and the power steering pump leak... which leaks like no other.

Installed a Pro 5.0 shifter two days ago. Also, I got hit on the front passenger fender, this is NUMBER THREE. I have been hit three times, each time the asshole left nothing, except some paint. Grrrr. The fender was marred nicely and has about a 4 inch crack in it, looks salvageable. I filed a report, anythings possible, heh. Also, I have a project... err two project cars, I put a page up for the link is http://zachrs.8m.com Can check there anytime, for a while the 94 camaro will be on hold while I work on the other camaro's. This page probably wont be updated for some time, but I am here! Email me if youre bored lol. Laterz

Well, since I last posted here, I have purchased, and installed a T-Top kit! w00t! I absolutly LOVE them! (Ok well I didnt install them, but I kinda did, Mike did most of the hard work Thanks!) Going to make a write up with pictures and the like. That should all happen sometime during this coming week. Going to finish the final fiberglass and painting Monday it looks like. And Mike has a camera! So maybe some pictures! This really isnt that bad of a project if you have the right stuff... like a sawzall :D

Little update. Clutch is broken in and is working VERY nicely, grabs quick and tight when needed, and still extremely drivable like a completely stock driveline setup, very pleased. Also, I purchased a T-Top kit for my car, which will be going in sometime in the near future, Mike @ Mackenzie Works will be giving me advice on the work. I picked up the kit off of ebay, which included, A-Pillar covers, mounting brackets, weather seals, t-tops and.... instructions ;) Also I have placed an Air Fuel Meter on the car, not that its really needed seeing as the car is computer controlled but thats ok, now at least I know when its running rich/lean etc. I will also have pictures of the car soon with the engine bay, rear fascia shots and a few other misc things, rotors, exhaust etc. Right now I am in the middle of a head gasket fix on a 86 T/A 305. Which I have come across as being quite... seized. Anyway, in doing this I have planned to get some different header bolts and some metal spacers and make them all into a over the valve cover looming system as well as a bolt spacer for easier take off, placement, and tightening, which I do monthly or as needed. That will also be photographed upon completion (I say that alot I'm aware... but soon!) And last but certainly not least, I took the liberty of recording the Z with its current exhuast modifications. Which are Hooker Metallic Cermic Coated Shorties w/coated Y-Pipe, stock single cat, and SLP Loudmouth Catback Dual/Dual Tips. You can pick up the MP3 sound file right here. It is about 700kb in size in 44 seconds in length. Goes through idle and a few revvs, 1.5k, 2k, 2.5k, 3k, 3.5k. The loudness of the sound cannot really be interpreted, mostly due to the cheap audio equipment (so sue me). Also I am going for my ASE certification tests in November, for Automatic Transmissions, Engine Repair, Braking Systems and Automotive Electronics. Going for a complete ASE certification of A1-A8 and then planning on doing Emissions control systems and maybe a few other things, welding, bodywork, High Performance trainging, etc.

Installed a new clutch (LT4), and made a write up for it, here. have to break the clutch in for the next 1000 miles. God it feels so good to drive again, and stall because the clutch actually grabs ;) Its actually alot easier than you may think, the hardest part was getting the car up high enough! LOL If you have any clutch install related questions, shoot em my way, I will help you out best I can. And no, no pictures sorry >:( no camera. Also gonna get the offroad pipe finished tomorrow ... if I can. Laterz.
July 21st
Wallpaper I 'made' lol more like saved but whatever, enjoy. The engine bay shot was about 1 month ago, before opticrap went out and before headers and stuff. The rear angle shot is from Phoenix, before I even bought the car, that pic was the one Rob took ;)
Ordered some Hooker Headers from Summit Racing. Metallic Ceramic Coated, with O2 and A.I.R. fittings, and a Y-Pipe. Also did plugs, went with Platinum Bosch, good deal. Changed those with the stocker manifolds on, only took about 1 hour 45 mins! Not Bad!!! ;) Did the headers in about 10 hours... ran into a few probs, plus I had to have the cat welded to the plate. Now I just just pop the cat on and off! Also, working on a custom Offroad Pipe for myself, and Over the Valve Cover spark plug wires. I'm going to pick up a set of wires and make the lengths myself, AND I am going to fab up some type of hanger/bracket in which they will be guided through, OVC. Going to be great looking... and sounding! So far the opti is holding up quite well, no complaints on that. Oh, one thing, for those of you who have done the !A.I.R. mod, you may want to consider the following, you will have MORE popping during deceleration, and maybe uven burnt vavles in the worst case. I am thinking of something to do with this to prevent those things from happening, without the need for an air pump and the wasted space. Something along the lines of a valve opened by a solenoid using the old AIR pump wiring. And perhaps a manual override switch. The big clunky valves I'm not really sure what to do with, but I will ponder this a bit more. Going to adjust my lash soon as well, the rockers are ticking. Or at least I hope thats it, and not the lifters... ugh or and exhuast leak! I will find out soon though since lash is a cakewalk with new headers, no AIR and nice neat bay ;)
Also, did a rear fascia modification, it now glows! Via neon tubes (green) as soon as I can get a hold of a camera or whatever (brother has ... misplaced ... the current camera) I will post pics of the following;
Rear Fascia Modification, Hooker Super Competition Regular Length Headers w/ Y-Pipe (Metallic Ceramic Coated), OVC wires and looms, Possible AIR valve/solenoid fabrication, Offroad Pipe (upon complete fabrication) and a few car pics from a stance as well as a few other things, eg; engine bay shots, rear shots etc.
Last but not least, the clutch... oooooh mama. Can you say getting soft. I am quite sure within the next few months (depending on my driving : / or lack there of ) it will crap out. I'm not worried about the work/down time, more or less the, debt (if you will) that I will be receeding into upon the purchase of this massive piece of technology! LOL! Better start getting the tools in preparation! 24" extension... hehe.
Laterz all!
June 27th
Opti came in the mail yesterday, put it on, and did !A.I.R. And a new belt, and some cleaning! However, I fear my powersteering pump is on its last limb. Tis making a high whine, lol almost like a blower! ;) Car is running GREAT! Going to disect old optispark and take a look around in there.
June 22nd
Coolant line busted on me, Optispark went south (the distributor) ripped the front of the engine off, waiting for new opti to come in. WOO!
